A useful website brief starts with a few clear decisions. Use this checklist to plan a new site, prepare for a redesign, or explain what needs to improve on your current website.
1. Define the job your website needs to do
Describe your business and its main services in plain language.
Identify the people you want to reach and the questions they are likely to have.
Choose the most important action a visitor should take, such as making an inquiry or requesting more information.
Write down what is working on your current site and what is getting in the way.
2. Plan the pages and content
List the pages people need to understand your business and take the next step.
Give each service a clear explanation of what it is and who it is for.
Gather your logo, brand guidance, photos, and existing copy.
Check that contact details and business information are current.
Identify content that needs to be written, updated, or removed.
3. Review the experience on your current site
Open the site on your phone and on a larger screen.
Check whether the first screen explains what your business does.
Follow the navigation and look for missing or confusing pages.
Try the main links and inquiry path.
Note any problems, including the page address and what happened.
If you are sharing an error screenshot, leave out passwords and private customer information.
4. Think beyond launch
Note who currently handles the website, domain, and hosting.
Decide who will keep content current as the business changes.
List the technical or content tasks you want help with.
Share any preferred timing, launch date, or other project dependencies.
You do not need every answer before getting in touch. Share what you know, what you want to change, and the questions you would like help working through.
